You know the story of Cleopatra and Mark Anthony... now it's time to learn the story of Alexandria and Cairo! These spectacular siblings started their lives in an irresponsible and unscrupulous breeder's pet shop in Cairo, Egypt. Sadly, in this part of the world Persians are way over bred and badly bred and then tossed out to fend for themselves on the mean streets of a hard city. This should not be the fate of any kitty, but especially the delicate Persian breed. When this breeder discovered that these two babies were deformed he was prepared to toss them like the others. Fortunately for them, there are some wonderfully compassionate, selfless people there who are desperately trying to change the fate of these kitties. They were rescued from the pet shop and lovingly fostered and given vet care until they were old enough to travel. Their rescuer reached out for help and we said that if they could get them here, we would see to their medical needs and find them loving homes. A network of amazing people worked tirelessly for many weeks to make this a reality and just a short time ago, these two angels, after traveling thousands of miles made their way to Nashville and are now safe and care for in a loving foster home. We immediately got them to our amazing vets for evaluation and discovered that they both share a VERY rare genetic orthopedic deformity known as radial agenesis (likely the result of very bad breeding practices). This essentially means that they are completely missing the radial bones in their front legs. There is nothing that can be done to correct this, but the good news is that it is not painful, they are completely mobile (more than anyone ever expected) and though they have to be careful not to jump down and land on their front legs for fear of a break, they have a wonderful quality of life and it should not impact their longevity. The other issues they are burdened with are that Alexandria is deaf and Cairo is almost completely blind. We originally thought that he was completely blind and would need to lose both eyes, but fortunately, it appears that he can see movement and shadows in one eye and will only need to lose one (he will be having this surgery this week). Neither of these disabilities will significantly impact their quality of life. Blind and deaf cats live perfectly normal and wonderful lives. So, now that you know their amazing story of hope and survival against seemingly insurmountable odds, how would you like to make them a part of your family? They must be adopted together and the best bonus: They may be two of the sweetest lap cats we have ever had the pleasure of knowing!! They are playful and delightful, just as you would expect any six month old kitten to be. If you are interested in adopting Alexandria and Cairo, contact us at FLUFFinfo@gmail.com.
